For users, the Hugger Mugger Standard Bolster ranges from squishy soft to almost rock hard when it comes to support. Like a yogic retelling of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, some users found the bolster simply too firm to even use, labeling it, “supportive almost to an extreme.”

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the foam core filling is found to be too soft for some. A cotton batting surrounds the foam but doesn’t offer much stability, especially if using in extreme weight-bearing poses such as Sukhasana, Supported Bound Angle, and forward folds. Depending on the user’s weight, the bolster may flatten out, thus providing no support at all.

Isn’t simply for finding bliss on the yoga mat

The Hugger Mugger Standard Bolster isn’t simply for finding bliss on the yoga mat. It can facilitate reaching enlightenment in other ways, like as a back cushion on the couch or extra support when sitting up in bed. One user even used it as a supportive assist during birth, proving Hugger Mugger bolster is truly multi-functional.

The bolster’s cover has a zipper neatly concealed by folds of fabric so as not to scratch or scrape against yoga apparel or bare skin. While the cover is removable, Hugger Mugger issues the disclaimer that their bolsters are Dry Clean Only, and the cover will shrink in the wash, thus rendering it difficult to put back on the bolster.

Some users ignored the warning or didn’t realize it was Dry Clean Only and found it impossible to put the cover back on after running it through the Gentle cycle on cold. A number of users washed and line dried the cover without problem but many who washed it had the same issue of not being able to get it back on the bolster.

One recommended solution was for Hugger Mugger to prewash their covers prior to fitting them onto the bolster so later machine washings wouldn’t pose an issue with shrinkage. Best bet is to spot clean the bolster with a damp cloth to give it a quick clean. Still, some users found the notion of dry cleaning a yoga bolster cover that’s made of cotton outrageous, especially for the price point involved.

The Hugger Mugger Standard Bolster is slightly smaller than some found in yoga studios, but the smaller size combined with the double handle feature – one on each end – makes the bolster easy to come at from all angles, as well as easy to transport from the studio, to the car, to the house, and back again.

Uses for the Hugger Mugger Standard Bolster

Bolsters, in general, are a great yoga prop to bring the floor up to meet students who find the full expression of certain yoga poses challenging. In addition, bolsters allow for total relaxation by adding extra support. Students do not have to worry about muscling into a pose like Pigeon, for instance. One Hugger Mugger Standard Bolster can be placed under the sit bone of the bent leg, and another can be place under the torso. If a student still needs more support, say, while moving the torso toward the floor, additional bolsters can be stacked one on top of the other to offer even more support.

The Hugger Mugger bolster also allows students to remain focused on the meditative component of their practice in that, through the use of props, they do not need to worry about moving beyond their edge. By placing a bolster under the back in a pose such as Reclined Hero, students can relax more fully into the pose while remaining focused and keeping the mind quiet.

In Restorative and Therapeutic Yoga, the use of props, and especially bolsters, are vital to achieving total rest, renewal, and relaxation. The purpose of Restorative Yoga is to encourage the nervous system to switch from the sympathetic (fight or flight) to the parasympathetic (rest and digest) nervous system.

The Hugger Mugger Standard Bolster is a soft, supportive bolster that, when propped up on blocks for Supta Badha Konasana or stacked four bolsters high in a modified Viparita Karani, allows for subtle openings and maximum chill-out. Students are given the permission – and the support through the use of bolsters, blocks, blankets and straps – to find ease and relaxation as they melt into the props supporting them.

Therapeutic and even Yin Yoga employ the use of bolsters in a slightly more active way. With a support like the Hugger Mugger bolster, students may find they can relax into poses for a longer amount of time while feeling a nice strength like in Matsyasana with the bolster under the shoulder blades.

Bolsters can also help ease low back pain by placing the Hugger Mugger bolster under the obliques while reclining on one side and releasing deeply through the use of the student’s own body weight. Bolsters placed under the knees in a straddle fold in Yin Yoga can alleviate tightness in the hamstrings and pulling on the sit bones. If for nothing else, the Hugger Mugger Standard Bolster is a great prop for sitting on in any practice to give students some extra height, especially if they experience low back pain or have tight hips and hamstrings.

Final Thoughts

To sum it all up, the Hugger Mugger Standard Bolster is a great product loved by yoga therapists, Restorative yoga instructors, and practicing yogis. The bolster has various uses such as ease low back pain, alleviate tightness in the hamstrings, relax into poses for a longer amount of time and many others.
